<p class=”MsoNormal” style=”margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;”>Thanks to the ‘eureka’ answer from this forum on how to remove the oil pan to change the gasket, I started looking up on the Rear Main Seal issue, because mine leaks more since I removed the tranny.
<p class=”MsoNormal” style=”margin: 12pt 0cm 10pt;”>Apparently our ’54 Y-block’s graphite rope seal has a known leak problem from day one. I did some homework and came up with Best Gaskets P/N3788W, (http://www.bestgasket.com/pop_up_picture.asp?PartNumber=3788W ) which is a modern rubber replacement that apparently resolves the problem.
<p class=”MsoNormal” style=”margin: 12pt 0cm 10pt;”>Has anyone tried this?
<p class=”MsoNormal” style=”margin: 12pt 0cm 10pt;”>Also, any suggestions on how to replace it without removing the engine from the car?
