Finally started the engine to my 49 Merc. It is a 255, 110 hp. After running for about ten minutes we noticed water was visible from 3-4 of the head bolts. The shop that rebuilt it indexed the bolts. I’ve heard they need to be retorqued after a few hundred miles. Does anyone know if it would be usual for the bolts to leak like this? Is retorquing required after first starting it like this? Any other ideas? Thanks,

I torqued the head bolts on my 53′ Merc when it was done. The I start it up without water for about 3 minutes, then let it cool off and then re-torque it again. Then fill the block with water and start it up and let it come to full temperature…let it cool off and then re-torque it again. Then run it about 100 miles and re-torque it again. Then I would say at least once a year there after.
The bolts will leak in the begining…..
