Try contacting Merle Fourez. He advertises in Quicksilver. His ad says he does '49-'55 but it might be worth a call. Number in the ad is 805-646-3345. Otherwise, you will just have to go down the list of advertisers and parts supplers until you get a lead on one. Good luck.

5917:

I
have a 53" Merc - very nice driver not a points car. As John Harvey said you can go with whatever color you
want. But when it came to my wheels I checked with a local guy that has built
two Dearborn winner 53's and this is what I learned. The wheel color is called
Vermillion. It took awhile but I found in made by Plasti-kote (FM-8134). It only
comes in 8 oz spray cans and I had to buy it through my local part store
(Carquest)...he was able to order it for me and get it in one day. Now as to painting the
wheels.....this is the fun part. From what I understand, the wheels were all
supplied in black to Ford. What they did was to spray the wheels only on one
side with the Vermilion color. When you paint the wheels, first spray then
black. Then spray the outside surface with the Vermillion and make sure
you spray through the holes in the rims as it will then leave the red paint (overspray or through spray) on
the back side of the rims. This is supposed to be the correct way. You can take
it for whatever you want but the paint is available and the procedure is easy
enough to do, plus it makes for a great story when you are telling others about
your restoration of the car.

Just pick a red that you think looks good, and make anyone challenging you about it either prove you wrong, or SHUT THE H_ _L UP. I consider this the correct response to anyone who's uninvited criticism about the corrrectness of your car is presented. These are art objects, produced by successful artists, over a relatively long period of time, in several different locations, with many different suppliers, and there were running changes by the factory through the production cycle. There is no 1 "correct" for the whole production run. Most of the parts did run through the whole production run, but there were changes made periodically, some of which actually were announced to the dealers, but many just magically appeared. Then there were the first few thousand and the last few thousand cars of a model run, especially where the changes were not shocking, like 48-49, 51-52, and 56-57, that were combinations of the current year, and the coming year.

If I recall correctly all 1954 Mercury wheels no matter the color of the body were all red and painted on both sides. Does anyone know a correct color code or is Fire Engine Red close enough to be correct? Also, is there a color code for the center of the hub caps?

Mike I read in one of my Hemmings mags about the m335 which was a 57 monterey with a 368 c.i. motor with a 3 speed and they said it was a truck transmission. they only built 100 of these cars for the street. a guy by the name Bill Strope and Hallman of the famous Hallman and Moody Ford Racing built the 368 for nascar and held thier own. You can find articals on the m335 on the internet. Hope this helps

The serial number plate was on the driver's side door post. Is there somewhere else that I should be looking to verify the serial number? The plate included the serial number, the engine number (R1) and several other items that I did not notate. I just bought the motor - the car is a four-door hardtop and may be for sale. Thanks for any additional information you might have.

I looked at Gary Richard's Tech info in the Fall/2001 issue of Quicksilver which discusses the '59 Model Identifications. In that article the first letter in the serial number is the engine code. For '59 the identifying letters are either L, M, N, or P for the US produced models. It appears obvious that the Canadian cars use a different ID code. Not sure where to find the Canadian IDs. Did you buy a complete car or just the engine? Where on the car is the R1 located? There were only three engine sizes offered in the US for '59. They are the 430 cu. in., the 383 cu. in. (two barrel carb or four barrel carb) and the 312 cu. in. Sorry I can't currently be of more help.

Power steering was available from the factory in '54. You can add it with the proper parts. You will need a pump, control valve, power (hydraulic) cylinder, and linkage. You will also need a drive belt for the pump and the hoses to connect your pump to the control valve. If you get a shop manual for your '54 (Faxon Auto Literature) there is an entire chapter devoted to power steering.

Which circuit do you want? The shop manual does not have an overall wiring diagram, they have 11 different ones, showing only one circuit. Only the convertible top diagram is body style specific.

Hi Members: I am looking for a complete wiring diagram for my car. I have some diagrams but they are not specifically for the 1954 Mercusy Sun Valley....Can you help me out? Jerry Robbins suggested that I contact some members and I have a list of Sun Valley owners that he provided me with and I will do that but he also suggested that I do the forum too. Thanks

Two updates: I got a little suspicious of the 360HP valve cover decal when I found the car had a Mercomatic rather than Multi-Drive Mercomatic and, sure enough, the VIN confirms that the engine is a 383ci, not the 430ci. Also found another 58 Monclair convertible in Jim Rogers (Las Vegas) collection. That makes 4 known survivors unless someone else comes up with more.
