This is a common problem with the '53s as everything rusts out behind the bumper. They make universal sockets that I used when I restored my '53. These have spring clips around the socket that you can plug in to the back of the turn signal assembly. You just need to get the correct size. Any decent parts store will have them in stock. As I recall, I had to do a little grinding on the assembly to get mine to fit properly. They have been in there for several years now and work just fine. If you need to change a bulb you simply "pop" them out, put in the bulb, and put them back in.

Thanks for the good locations - I am glad to know about them. It appears that sockets are not included with the socket wire repair kits and that is what I am missing. Perhaps the "junkyard" is my only option.

I am looking for 1 (would buy 2 if I can find) front right parking light socket. I can find the repair wire but nothing with the socket attached. Can anyone give me some ideas of where to locate them?

I would suggest that you use a 54 or old overdrive so you can use the 6 volt stuff. unless you have converted to 12 volt. If you have I would use a 55 or newer. If you use the heavy duty overdrive, try to use a 57 or newer.

My Hollanders shows that 54 Mercury OD is alone. I have no idea why, but I bet that it you don't mind doing a little modification, you can get anything that will bolt to the engine to work. 54-57 Ford and Mercury had overdrive transmission listed under 452, then they go from blank, through 452 A- 452L for everything up to 1962, including light duty trucks. I'd take a flyer and guess that anything that will bolt to a 272, 292, or 312 can be made to work. My question is why do you want to go to all the work and expense of changing from an automatic (if it works and is in decent shape) to an overdive? Even with gas at $4 a gallon, it is hard to believe that you will drive a 58 year old car enough to save enough gas to pay off.

Is anyone else travelling from central/north central Indiana to Iola on Thursday early? If so, I would like to join up for a caravan to Iola. We plan to travel to the west of Chicago, not through or the I-65 routes - too dangerous! Right now US 24 to I-39 appears to be favored.

I want to change one of my 54 Mercurys from an automatic transmission to a 3 speed/overdrive system. I have everything needed but the O/D transmission. Does anyone know what years of Mercury and/or Ford would be a substitute for an actual O/D transmission from a 54? It seems that a true 54 Mercury transmission is difficult to find. At least for me. Thank you, Allen Faltus afaltus@elltel.net

I used a color that you can get at most auto parts stores in a spray can. I used a GM color called Garnet. If it gets down to whether you have the actual "correct" color in your wheel covers, offer the judge a beer, which will probably have more influence than anything anyone else can say. The factory never published a paint formula for the part. After getting close to 60 years, even NOS ones will no longer be "right".

Just got off the phone with Gary Richards regarding your question. The simple answer is that they are not the same color and in fact Gary says the hubcap color isn't actually red but something more toward burgundy but not that dark. He also said the color is translucent so that you can see through it slightly. He suggested trying a hobby shop spray paint selection. The problem with using translucent paint is that if you scuff the hubcap so that the paint will stick the scuff marks will show up through the paint. If you don't scuff the hubcap the paint won't stick and will come off with the spray from a hose.

I don't know of a company who makes a kit for all the clips. The only factory clips you will need on your '55 are the rocker panel molding clips and the roof rail clips. All of the other stainless (quarter panels, fenders, doors, hood) can use the universal clips that bolt on). You can get them in various sizes at any parts store and for a whole lot less money than the factory clips. When I did my '55 a few years back I got the roof rail and rocker panel clips from a gentleman in Whittier, CA. His name was Guy. I reached him at 310 696 3307. I don't know if he is still in business as this was almost 20 years ago. I think some of our suppliers (Mercuryland, MACS, Dennis Carpenter) may also have these clips or know where you can get them. Good luck.

Re: my '66 Comet Convertible I'm trying to find the correct seal for the windsheild to door post seal. (A post). I have been told that the Fairlane and Comet seals are differant? The stainless track the seal fits in on my car is approx. 1" wide while the seal is 3/4" wide. The part # I have is C60Z-7602626. Appreciate any help, thanks Fred
